Plumb Beach

Third Graders returned to Plumb Beach for the Fall Clean-up.  A Social Action Event that has been taking place since 1990--almost 30 years.

Steve Wilson came back from retirement to help lead.  Even though it was his birthday.  Or should I say, because it was his birthday.

Thanks to Justin Weiner for his amazing photos.

Full STEAM Ahead

Second graders figured out how to move heavy loads...They were given a problem.  They had to plan.  Then try out an idea after agreeing on what to try first.

Given a plank--lift up three large blocks.  (A few created a catapult!  Yikes.)

Given pipes, blocks, and faucets...get water to  the planters 4 feet away.

Given rollers move a crate down the schoolyard track...

Given planks, move a crate up the staircase without carrying it.

WAMBA: Water Ambassadors from BNS

BNS fourth graders, under the guidance of  Laurie Matthews and Susan Westover, became advocates for our planet's waterways.  As a part of their work, they created public service messages to inform others about the importance of water.

On June 25th, when their friends were at home, 6 WAMBAs shared their work as part of the Billion Oyster Project Research Symposium on Governor's Island. It was great to see how poised they were as they talked about their work.

BNS has an oyster station on Valentino Pier

Postcards

At Ecorama this year, students were asked to write a postcard on an environmental issue to Senator Schumer, Senator Gillibrand, Representative Ocasio-Cortez, or Brooklyn Borough President Adams.

Here is a sampling of some of them.
