Watershed: From Reservoir to Tap

Fourth Graders made models of the New York State watershed using newspaper landforms covered by plastic to see where bodies of water formed.  As they sprayed blue "rain", they speculated as to where fresh, drinking water might have been found 350 years ago. Then they were told pollution and habitat destruction led to the need for downstate New Yorkers to get their water from upstate reservoirs.  What would happen if they too became polluted?

Teachers put drops of red food color "pollution" in a spot in the watershed.  Would the pollution enter the student designated reservoirs? Students created another rain storm to find out.
