Mussel Island

The "Gowanus" Island could use a mussel garden. After learning about how mussels can improve a waterway like the Canal, students went to work. They built model floating mussel gardens using found materials.  The stand-in for mussels?  Washers. Students will send their plans to landscape architects.

PVC pipe floats!

This island held the most washers!

Ran out of bubble wrap...vinyl gloves filled with air held the "mussels" aloft.

Students drew their designs.

Shore Explore: More Images

Circling up to meet and sing our shore song led by Bill on his ukulele.

Guide books and clipboards ready for shore explorers.

Tanks for critters.

Boundaries marked by green streamers.

Recording is part of exploring.

Grownup monitoring water's edge border.

Pouring water into pipe...but the pipe never got filled up???

Lucky some adults wore boots and were able to get water to these cooks.

A theme all year:  moving water...

Reading a field guide together.

Look what I found...
a live clam.

Back at school, plenty to write and draw about.
