Stop to Smell the Flowers....

Andrew's class worked with Johanna to shop for
and plant rainbow gardens in the two planters in front of BNS...

Leftover plants go into tree pits.

Stormwater Runoff

Fourth graders are discovering that the storm drains on 3rd Place  lead directly to our waterways.

Johanna is capturing spring water that has run down the street.  Students will test to see if its  pH has changed.

Don't worry.  Johanna is taking pictures and blocking traffic as students  look into the storm drain.

Meanwhile, other students are surveying 3rd Place to see if there are signs of pollution.  And to see if some of the stormwater  could be absorbed, filtered, or slowed down.

Then students designed their own "artificial" wetlands to help keep stormwater runoff from sweeping all sorts of pollutants into our nearby waterways.

Renewable Energy

Kindergarten students learn about wind power. As part of their study of the shore, they investigate floaters, sinkers, and flinkers.  Then they add sails to floaters and test how sea-worthy they are.

Thanks to Valerie for these pictures of hers and Marisol's students working in Studio 106A.

Tipped over but still afloat.

A double-masted schooner

Looks like a floater.

It can sail!

BUG Hotel Ready for Occupancy

First graders are still finishing the accommodations at the BUG Hotel, but the first guests have already arrived.  Spotted:  some rolypolys!

Jenny's students work on the deck of the ECOCASITA  to furnish the rooms using natural materials.

Some students drill holes for insects to burrow in.  Others wrap materials in burlap or place in cans.

Pigeons Visit BNS

Rica, a Kindergarten parent of a student in Kori's class, made the arrangements for pigeon raisers, Andrew and Nelson, to come all the way from New Jersey and the Bronx with their amazing birds. (Don't worry. they didn't let the pigeons drive!) All four K classes got a chance to ask questions and touch the birds.

This one looks like a Mo Willems drawing.

Andrew telling students that he has been raising pigeons since he was 8.

Did you know that pigeons have crowns and boots?

Bird's eye view

Cool!
