Ann Rosen Leads Fourth Graders in Redesigning the Gowanus

Building on what they are learning in Science and Social Studies, fourth graders are working on designing The Gowanus Canal of the Future.  This work and more is on display in and near first floor gallery.

                                                                  THE PROCESS

First 4th graders explored with different materials--wire, fabric, and paper-- to represent plants, structures and water.

Eventually fourth graders will plan and create a small part of the Canal of the Future using all of these materials.  Each team will have to have factories, homes, hospitals, plants, HEALTHY water ways, recreational areas, stormwater runoff strategies...

Fifth Graders: Definitely a Good Source of Renewable Energy

The wind didn't cooperate fully, but that didn't stop fifth graders from generating energy.  They created their own wind as they ran with KIDWIND generators.

The moving air generated enough electricity to power a light bulb and a motor!

Training up some younger students in the ways of green.

Green Energy with Fifth Graders

Getting electrons jumping from atom to atom with solar cells on a cloudy day is not so easy...but these fifth graders managed to get some motors running....

And when the sun peeked through the clouds, the kids sounded like a bunch of sun worshippers!

Third Graders Flood a Little Bit of Kenya

It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.
Wangari Maathai  1940--2011

As part of their study of African biomes, third graders discover Wangari Maathai's wisdom and bravery.  They see for themselves the impact of denuded grasslands when they make it rain on grass covered soil and compare it to rain on bare soil.

Getting ready to flood the plantless soil.  Most students predict a mudslide.   If variables are right, there is one!

Green Flag Ceremony Led by BNS Students

This flag was presented in 2014 but it was earned by the vision and efforts  of BNS students, families, and staff going back 10 years or more...

Emily Fano is a fan of all that our students have done.  Kids were thrilled when she listed  projects that they contributed to including beach clean-up, farming, and recycling.

The National Wildlife Association Green Eco-Schools Green Flag was presented to us by Emily Fano and Brad Lander.

Adults and students had a lot to say to each other.

Brad Lander stayed to hear what the children had to say and told them about his plans including "taxing" plastic shopping bags.
