Fruit, Oxygen, Shade, Animal Homes, or Paper?

In other words...trees or paper? First graders talked about the dilemma. Then they went on to make recycled paper out of old newspaper and new paper out of leek leaves. You will see their work on display at their Farm Museums. Take a preview of their leek paper book marks.

Johanna and Other Weekend Volunteers Rescue Hens From Snow

Bottom Line...Hens Hate Snow.  Johanna set up a tarp. Tarp is only a temporary solution.  Need to shore up roof of pen.  If you can help, leave a comment.

And just a few hours later...Alex, a volunteer,  came by with his children, Colin, 1st grader, and Elliot, a Pre-K kid.   They saw La Rubia laying one of her trademark blue eggs.  And noticed that  the tarp had fallen down.  Alex is planing on returning  with rope to reattach.  Yeah!

Overheard in BNS Hallways..

Custodial workers chatting about how the third floor recycling is much improved.  Thanks to Ita and her 3rd grade crew.  Look what one teacher did to help her students recycle properly.

Thumbs Up...
Take Two

Thank you fifth graders.

Fourth Grade Trout Raisers Study Fish Anatomy

Fish caught as food for bodies, become food for brains as students examine exterior of fish.  They compare their fish to the diagram of a trout.  Can they find the tell tale adipose fin?  Do they have a trout?*

Students are amazed by the mechanics of the fishes' mouths.

Trying to figure out how a fish a protruding upper "lip" feeds.

A trout

One or two children decided not to stay to look at the  once living fish.  I admit I had reservations about buying a, let's be frank, a dead trout.*  But the majority of students were able to respectfully handle and examine the fish.

All students got a chance to virtually "dissect" a fish:

Lunch Recess Gets Greener and Greener

Third graders were thrilled to see a bit of snow at recess today; only they claimed 'the little kids' who were in the big yard before them 'used it all up!'"

After trying to gather any remaining snow and building one small snowball, third graders attempted to build with fabric on this windy day.

How interesting to watch them try to navigate inflating 'walls' acting like boat sails as they tried to build their houses.  One structure actually experienced lift off, blowing away from the fence and onto the track in the yard!

Second Grade Naturalists Also Work with Nancye Good

"I never wanted to be a scientist per se. I wanted to be a naturalist." Jane Goodall

Knowing how to use natural materials to survive is empowering.
Here is Nancye modeling how to build a shelter with leaves and twigs.

Survival monkey is safe...

Then on to building and testing out kid sized shelters.
