Homage to the Clothesline

The challenge:  Partners build  a clothesline using pulleys in order to get more familiar with the use of this simple machine and the concept of tension.

The result:  Amanda's and Shannon's second graders longing for connection in a time of isolation, built a network of clotheslines for their Teddy Bears.  Children and stuffies alike, joined by a web of string carrying messages, surprises, and love.  A community at work.

Thumb Piano

As part of their study of African musical instruments and sound, Renee's class made thumb pianos.  They drilled, etched, hammered, sand papered, and painted  in order to create them.

Pinewood Derby: Where BCS and BNS Physics Students Meet

The hallway outside of the Makers' Space was filled with cheering as  first graders observed BCS student designed cars race each other. The day before, BCS high schoolers visited several BNS classrooms to describe the variables that made their cars fast.

In a few months, first graders will be designing their own cars with found objects.  BNS and BCS staff are talking about future collaborations.  Perhaps another car race?  This time with first graders testing their cars?

Third Graders Invent Instruments with Found Objects

Sound and African Instruments and Music are united in this exploration of the sound of found materials.  Can students create an instrument with at least 2 pitches?  And with enough amplification to be heard? That was the design challenge.
